December 4th, 2009 - 6:19 pm ICT by IANSMohali, Dec 4 (IANS) Police chief of this Punjab district Gurpreet Singh Bhullar had a miraculous escape when he was saved from being hit by a speeding car near Zirakpur town here early Friday, officials said.
Bhullar had reached an accident spot where a car had collided with an oil-tanker, burning alive two occupants of the car near Zirakpur town. Around 1 a.m., he was standing on the roadside along with other police officers when a rashly driven Maruti car came towards them.
“To save Bhullar’s life somebody pushed him to the other side. However, the car hit three people, including two cops and one civilian. They were admitted to a government hospital in Chandigarh with serious injuries,” a police officer said.
While fire extinguishers were busy dousing the flames, police had barred the entry of vehicles from Chandigarh. Still this car entered the area and due to slippery condition of road the sriver lost his balance and knocked the police.
Police later arrested the driver of the car who was identified as Sandeep, a resident of Patiala town, some 60 km from here.
Sandeep told police he had come to Chandigarh to attend a wedding.
“I got frightened on seeing police barricades, therefore I tried to run away to escape any questioning from police. But somehow I lost my balance and hit the police officers standing there,” Sandeep said.
