The killing was reported from Raigarh district close to the Orissa border, some 300 km from capital Raipur.
“The middle-aged Maoist, who was a senior ultra and suspected to be divisional commander of the Maoists, was killed in a brief gunfight with a contingent of state police,” Anil M. Navaney, state director general of police, told newsmen here.
Police recovered an AK-47 from the dead ultra as well.
Chhattisgarh, described as one of the worst leftist insurgency-hit states in the country, has surprisingly reported no Maoist attacks either on police or civilians in the past four months.
