New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) A high alert has been sounded and security tightened around the US embassy in the national capital after Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was shot dead by US forces in his Pakistan hideout, police said Monday.

Additional forces have been deployed at the US embassy and other areas in Chanakyapuri, the city’s diplomatic enclave in south side, and at the American Center in Connaught Place in central Delhi.

“We have put our personnel on full alert and have strengthened the security around the US embassy at Chanakyapuri. The special security measures were put in place soon after US President Barrack Obama announced the killing of Osama bin Laden Monday morning. We are taking the matter very seriously,” a senior Delhi Police official told IANS.

“We have intensified patrolling in the diplomatic areas and at the American Center. Police control room vans have been deployed outside the American Center and the US embassy. Snipers too have been deployed at high-rise buildings,” he added.

Bin Laden was killed early Monday morning by US Special Forces in a helicopter-borne operation in Abbottabad, 120 km north of the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
