New Delhi, May 4 (IANS) A merchant navy officer was arrested with counterfeit dollars with face value of $10,000 while trying to exchange them for Indian currency here, police said Wednesday.

Vishal Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested Monday from Connaught Place area in central Delhi when he came to exchange the fake notes at a money-changer shop, Additional Commissioner of Police K.C. Dwivedi told reporters.

Singh, a diploma holder in marine engineering, was employed with a shipping firm since October 2008.

“During interrogation, he said that he got these currency notes in exchange for notes of a lower denomination from a money-changer in London,” Dwivedi said.

“However, he could not produce any official record or receipt of such transaction,” he added.

Police said that his salary documents did not support his being in possession of such a large amount of foreign currency.
