Lucknow, Oct 19 (IANS) A mob set a police outpost on fire, damaged vehicles and fought pitched battles with the police in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, after a college manager was shot dead by two gunmen, officials said.

“Heavy security has been deployed in the town and the situation is now under control,” deputy superintendent of police P.P. Singh told reporters in Kanpur, some 80 km from Lucknow.

The crowd was angered by the murder of Pankaj Singh, manager of the Mother Girls’ Inter College, who was shot dead by two assailants Tuesday near his house in Ghatampur town.

Police are yet to establish the motive behind the crime.

The mob also set the Ghatampur police outpost on fire and torched several police vehicles. Police had to baton charge the crowd to disperse them.

“No one has been seriously injured in the incident,” Singh said.

Two men have been detained in connection with the murder, police sources said.
