Schalke, Bayern Munich jointly top German Bundesliga

Berlin, Jan 22 (IANS) Schalke put on a dominating performance and convincingly beat Stuttgart to go joint top with German Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
Schalke piled on the pressure from the start against Stuttgart and took just three minutes to score as young midfielder Joel Matip poked home a rebound from very close range.
As the match progressed Stuttgart became more adventurous but were unable to breach Schalke’s well positioned defence.
Eleven minutes into second half, Schalke doubled the lead through defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos who nodded home from a corner.
Subsequently, Stuttgart tried to press Schalke into defence but the homeside answered with a terrific one touch combination that was finished by youngster midfielder Julian Draxler from 14 meters, in the 80th minute. Stuttgart managed to score a consolation goal three minutes later thanks to Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki.
The win takes Schalke to 37 points, equal with division leader Bayern while Stuttgart slipped from eighth to 10th position with 22 points.
