Scarlette rape and murder: accused appears before Goa courtMarch 10th, 2008 - 8:24 pm ICT by admin
Panaji, March 10 (IANS) A 28-year-old barman arrested in connection with the rape and murder of British teenager Scarlette Keeling appeared in a court here Monday and was sent to police custody for 14 days. The Goa police had arrested the barman, Samson D’Souza, after a witness claimed to have seen him in a “compromising position” with the victim just two hours before Scarlette’s body was found on Goa’s famous Anjuna beach three weeks ago.
“D’Souza has been arrested on the grounds that he was seen by a witness in a compromising position with the victim just two hours before her body was found,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kishen Kumar said.
“In addition to rape charges, murder charges have also been registered against D’Souza,” Kumar told IANS.
Earlier, the Kumar said D’Souza was the only suspect arrested in connection with the murder of the foreigner.
“Only one person, Samson D’Souza, has been arrested. The media reports claiming four people have been arrested are false and misleading,” Kumar said.
The IGP said people were summoned to a police station for questioning and waiting media persons had jumped to the conclusion that they have been arrested.
The IGP however, refused to comment on the victim’s family demanding a CBI enquiry in the case claiming they had no faith in the Goa police.
“The police is doing its job and has been successful to some extent and it is for the government to decide whether to transfer the investigation,” he said.
Although the report of the first autopsy conducted on the victim indicated that she had drowned, a second autopsy concluded that 15-year-old Scarlette was murdered.
The first post-mortem examination report had said there were three bruises on the victim’s body while the second report said there were around 50.
Scarlette from Devon was on a visit to India with her mother and siblings since last November.
