‘Save Himalayas, create separate ministry for region’
September 9th, 2011 - 7:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) A separate ministry should be set up for the Himalayas, which face ecological threats like deforestation and increasing pollution, a group of environmentalists suggested Friday.
“The Himalayas are gradually dying due to large-scale commercial activities increasing the pollution. A separate ministry in the union government for Himalayan regions is need of the hour,” said Anil Joshi, founder of Himalayan Environment Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO).
A group of environmentalist gathered in national capital to celebrate Sep 9 as Himalaya Day.
The day was chosen by activists in 2010 to bring awareness to save the lofty ranges of Himalayas which are under ecological threat due to increased human interference.
“We are trying to attract the attention of common citizens towards the importance of Himalayas in overall building of national environment,” Joshi said.
Noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna said: “The disturbances in the Himalayas is not a concern for the Himalayan communities alone. Conserving the pristine Himalayas should be the responsibility of every citizen of the country.”
“Both Himalayan and non-Himalayan communities should join and improve the degenerating condition of the Himalayas,” he added.
