Saurashtra upset fancied Mumbai in Buchi Babu cricket

Chennai, Sep 12 (IANS) Mumbai crashed to a stunning two-wicket defeat against Saurashtra in the quarter-finals of the All-India Buchi Babu cricket tournament, here Friday.For Saurashtra, Jayadev Niranjan Shah scored a century with the help of 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Chasing a target of 334 in 90 overs, Saurashtra were struggling at 244 for seven when R. Jadeja (55, 6 x 4) and Kamlesh Makwana (37) put on 85 runs for the eighth wicket to frustrate Mumbai’s aspirations.

Earlier, Jaydev, son of Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah, played an innings of character to set up the successful Saurashtra chase as he added 150 runs for the second wicket with Chirag Raju Pathak (60).

Also through to the semi-fianals were Tamil Nadu who overcame Baroda by 14 runs with off-spinner R. Ashwin taking four for 109.

Meanwhile, C. Raghu played a captain’s knock of 101 (15 x 4) to power Karnataka into the semi-finals with a five-wicket win over Tamil Nadu Combined Districts XI.

Completing the semi-final line-up were Gujarat, who defeated Hyderabad by 71 runs.

In the two-day semi finals commencing Sunday, Saurashtra meet Gujarat and Tamil Nadu take on Karnataka.
