Hyderabad, April 21 (IANS) Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba continues to be in a very critical condition, doctors attending on him said Thursday evening.

According to the doctors at Sathya Sai Super Speciality Hospital at Puttaparthi in Anantapur district, Baba is suffering from liver failure while the heart has turned weak.

The medical bulletin said all the organs are showing very poor response to the treatment.

“The intermittent episodes of low blood pressure are persisting indicating that the heart is quite weak,” said the statement by the hospital director A.N. Safaya.

“The parameters of the functioning of the various organs of the body are also erratic. Every attempt is being made to keep them in the normal limits by the administration of appropriate drugs,” the statement said.

“The breathing is still assisted by the ventilator. One successful cycle of low haemodialysis was conducted during the past 12 hours to assist the kidney functioning,” it added.

As Baba’s deteriorating condition sent anxiety among millions of his devotees in India and abroad, the Andhra Pradesh government deployed additional police forces.

About 3,000 policemen were rushed from neighbouring districts to tackle any law and order situation that may arise due to any emotional outburst by the devotees.

Minister for Major Industries J. Geeta Reddy, who rushed to the town to monitor the situation, held a meeting with doctors attending on Baba and also members of Sathya Sai Central trust.

In Hyderabad, Minister for Revenue Raghuveera Reddy said Baba’s condition had turned very critical and doctors were making last-ditch efforts to make his vital organs function.

The 85-year-old spiritual leader, seen as the incarnation of god by his devotees in India and abroad, was admitted to the hospital March 28 with breathing problem. The doctors later said he was suffering from multi-organ dysfunction.
