London, Feb 8 (IANS) The US presidential hopeful, Rick Santorum, has swept the contests for the Republican Party nomination in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado by defeating long-time front-runner Mitt Romney, the BBC reported Wednesday.
By outperforming Romney, who has struggled to connect with the party’s conservative base, Santorum has sent shockwaves through frontrunner Mitt Romney’s camps, the Sun reported.
The ex-Massachusetts governor Romney had prevailed in both Minnesota and Colorado in 2008 when he first ran to lead the Republicans into a battle for the White House. He had been expected to win till a few days ago.
The winner of the nomination will go up against US President Barack Obama in the presidential race in November.
