Sangma seeks report on rebel’s ‘killing’ in Bangladesh
September 2nd, 2011 - 12:25 am ICT by IANSShillong, Sep 1 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Thursday asked the union health ministry to confirm the alleged killing of secessionist Khasi rebel leader Bobby Reagan Marwein in Bangladesh.
Quoting government sources, the Kolkata-based daily Telegraph said Marwein, the military wing chief of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), was killed in a brawl in Bangladesh earlier this week.
Indian intelligence agencies’ officials here described the report as a false alarm.
“His (Marwein) associates confirmed to us that Marwein is still alive and he is in Bangladesh,” an official said on condition of anonymity.
The HNLC is a secessionist group fighting for a sovereign Khasi homeland in eastern part of Meghalaya.
“Since the incident was reported in another country, it is not possible for us to confirm or deny the report. But I have sought for a report from the centre to verify the news,” Sangma told reporters here.
Marwein?s younger sister Janet Marwein said: ?We are also trying to confirm the veracity of the report. No one has contacted us.?
