Samajwadi Party activists protest Noida rape arrests
January 10th, 2009 - 1:17 am ICT by IANSNoida, Jan 9 (IANS) The Samajwadi Party activists Friday protested the arrest of seven men from a village in Noida for the alleged rape of a management student earlier this week, saying that while justice should be done, “no innocent should be booked”. Samajwadi Party workers blocked the DND Expressway, bringing the traffic to a halt for nearly 30 minutes.
Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order in the state.
“The Mayawati government has completely failed to maintain law and order in the state. There is no law in the state. Everyday crimes are happening in Noida and the police have failed to control the situation,” Amar Singh told reporters.
Amar Singh was, however, careful while coming to the defence of the arrested men.
“It is a shame on the city and the administration. Those behind the incident should be punished but no innocent should be booked,” Singh said.
Amar Singh and other party workers were arrested and later released.
The Noida police Thursday night arrested Anil Yadav - the seventh accused for the gang rape. Five men were arrested on the night of the rape while Jagvir Singh Yadav alias Little was arrested Wednesday.
“We are conducting raids on the possible hideouts of the culprits and seeking information from the arrested people. People known to them are being questioned. We hope to arrest the remaining people soon,” Superintendent of Police (City) A.K. Tripathi told IANS.
The victim, a management student from south Delhi, had gone with her friend Amit Pawar to the Great Indian Place Mall in Sector 18 market Monday.
According to the police, the girl and her friend in their WagonR car were returning to their homes in Delhi when around 10 men intercepted them. They raped the girl after thrashing Pawar.
