Salgaocar thrash Churchill Brothers 3-0 in I-League

Fatorda (Goa), Jan 22 (IANS) Salgaocar Sports Club scored two quick goals midway into the first session as the defending champions thrashed Churchill Brothers 3-0 in a 16th round I-League football clash at the Nehru Stadium here Sunday.

The Goan derby started fiercely with Salgaocar taking the early initiative, peppering the rival goal with swift attacks.

It was Ryuiji Sueoka who set the pace for Salgaocar, as Churchill defence found him too slippery. The Japanese midfielder tested rival goalkeeper Felix D’Souza’s alertness with a smart flick which Felix somehow managed to parry away.

Till the first half an hour, it remained goalless but the defending champions took the lead at the stroke of the half an hour mark when Ishfaq Ahmed put the ball in the net.

Four minutes later, Edeh Chidi scored the team’s second goal as Salgaocar had the match well and truly in its pocket. Sueoka converted from spot in 84th minute as the defending champions completed the rout.

Salgaocar are now at 28 points from 16 matches while Churchill stays at 29 points from 15 outings.
