Rs.40 lakh robbed from jeweller’s house

Ghaziabad, April 7 (IANS) Armed men looted cash and valuables worth Rs.40 lakh from a jeweller’s house here Thursday afternoon. The jeweller’s wife was attacked and injured when she resisted the robbers, police said.

Mahesh Chand Verma Thursday returned home from his shop for lunch, when the incident took place. The maid opened the door to him and eight men hiding outside barged in.

They ransacked the house at gunpoint and took one kg of gold, 5 kg of silver and Rs.5 lakh in cash, Verma said.

“When my wife Kusum Verma, 60, tried to oppose, the criminals hit her on head with pistol butts. At the time of the incident, five of my family members and a maid were present in the house,” Verma told the police.

The robbers fled on four motorcycles. Verma estimated his loss to be around Rs.40 lakh.

“We have suspended six policemen for laxity in duty. A team of police officers has been formed to nab the robbers. We are questioning the maid for her suspected role in the crime,” said police officer Praveen Rajan Singh.
