Rs.3.5 crore seized in Punjab
December 28th, 2011 - 9:02 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Dec 28 (IANS) Authorities in Punjab have seized over Rs.3.5 crore of unaccounted money from various places during stepped up checking in the run up to the Jan 30 Punjab assembly election.
Punjab’s Special Chief Electoral Officer Usha R. Sharma said the money was recovered from vehicles in different parts of the state in the last 72 hours. About Rs.85 lakh was recovered Monday.
The seizures were made from Mohali, Ludhiana, Patiala, Khanna, Jagraon, Barnala, Rajpura and Hoshiarpur.
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal Wednesday complained to the Election Commission that traders and others carrying cash of Rs.1 lakh for business purposes were also being checked and harassed.
The delegation said frequent checking on the highways created a sense of terror in the minds of public.
