Chennai, Nov 30 (IANS) It is estimated that losses caused due to the heavy rains that battered parts of Tamil Nadu during the past four days could be as much as Rs.15 billion, an official said Sunday. A request for relief from the central government funds would be submitted shortly, the official said.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said that the government had done its best under the circumstances. “While the government continues to do its best, the opposition is making false and politically-motivated allegations”.
Every family affected by the floods was given Rs.2,000, and 10 kg of free rice, according to a government press statement.
Meanwhile, officials speaking to IANS on condition of anonymity admitted that power supply to some parts of the state capital and some districts was switched off for the third day to prevent electrocution due to water-logging.
The statement added that schools in Cuddalore and Tiruvarur districts would remain closed from Monday for three days.
Inundated low-lying areas faced the threat of water-borne diseases as raw sewerage mixed with stagnant water, members of the public alleged.
