Mumbai, Dec 18 (IANS) The Republican Party Of India (RPI) said it will block rail services in the northeastern part of the city Monday to pressurise the government for allotting land for a memorial to Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar.

“We shall stop all incoming and outgoing trains, both locals and long-distance, tomorrow morning at Mulund,” the RPI’s Pawan Borude said.

This could create major delays for lakhs of suburban commuters bound for their offices in south Mumbai and other areas, as well as disrupt the schedules of outstation trains.

He said the government was dilly-dallying over allotting suitable land for the Ambedkar memorial in Dadar.

Earlier, a group of activists of the Republican Sena — a separate party led by Anandraj Ambedkar, a grandson of the B.R. Ambedkar — entered and laid siege to the Indu Mills premises in Dadar, demanding that around 12 acres be allotted for the proposed memorial.

Last week, after the centre expressed willingness to allot upto four acres, angry RPI activists stormed the mill premises, ransacked the property and squatted on the property, demanding 12 acres for the memorial.
