Ronjan Sodhi becomes World No.1, says best yet to come
August 1st, 2011 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) India’s double-trap exponent Ronjan Sodhi became the world’s top-ranked shooter Monday and said his best is yet to come.
“It feels great to be No.1 shooter in the world. I have done well consistently in the last couple of years and have been among the top five regularly. Being the No.1 shooter was always a dream since I picked up the gun. It wasn’t easy but I have worked hard to achieve this,” said Sodhi, a former double world record holder.
Sodhi, who won the gold medal in the Asian Games, was unfortunate to miss a berth for the 2008 Beijing Games but now the shooter is determined to make up for it.
“It was tough missing the Beijing Olympics. During that time I had set two world records and was also among the top three in the World. But I have left those things behind. I have moved ahead in life and would like to give my best at the London Games,” the Ferozepur-born shooter said.
Sodhi backed the Indian shooters to win 2-3 medals in London.
“We already have eight shooters who have qualified for 2012. I am expecting another 3-4 quota places for India and I strongly believe that going by our strengths we can win 2-3 medals,” he said.
The shooter lauded the government’s efforts in helping the shooters.
“The government has helped us in every possible way. Without government support, Olympic sport cannot survive in India. But what makes me feel sad is that despite winning so many medals in international events shooting has not got its due,” he said.
