Kolkata, Feb 22 (IANS) A woman in a West Bengal town was pushed to death from a third-floor balcony by robbers who went on looting the house as the victim’s terrified husband and son watched, police said Friday. Chandana Das, 42, was allegedly pushed off the balcony Thursday by a gang of 15 that raided her home in Kanchrapara town of North 24 Parganas district adjoining Kolkata. The woman’s husband is a jeweller.
The gang left with Rs.2 million worth of cash and jewellery, and left behind the lifeless body of the woman who bled to death. The woman had tried to raise an alarm, leading to her murder.
“A gang of armed criminals entered the residence of jeweller Bimal Das early Thursday and looted cash and jewellery. His wife Chandana Das was killed in a fall from the third floor balcony,” said North 24 Parganas police superintendent Supratim Sarkar.
Police said the dacoits raided the house around 2.45 a.m. and remained there till 4.30 a.m.
The family’s jewellery shop is on the ground floor of the house while they lived on the third floor. Bimal and Chandana’s daughter Barsha, 15, and son Bidyut, 11, were forced to watch the looting and the murder of their mother.
Family members said the killers grabbed Chandana when she tried to rush to the balcony and raise an alarm. In the scuffle that followed, she was pushed over the edge.
