New Delhi, July 19 (IANS) Delhi Police have arrested a 31-year-old man who allegedly led a gang involved in robbing people withdrawing money from banks in south Delhi area in 2005 and was on the run since then, police said.
The police also recovered from him a pistol with two cartridges.

“Acting on a tip-off, Harish, a resident of Lado Sarai area, was arrested Friday from near Lodhi Colony area where he had come with an accomplice to rob a person who had to withdrew cash from ICICI Bank. Though Harish was arrested, his accomplice who was riding a motor cycle, managed to escape,” said a senior police officer.

“During October and November 2005, the accused alongwith other accomplices robbed two customers who withdrew cash amounting to Rs.495,000 and Rs.190,000 respectively from ICICI Bank Green Park extension,” the police officer added.

According to the officer, three of the gang - Sharik, Zafar and Sarfaraz - were arrested but Harish, who was the leader, was absconding. “His name surfaced after every such robbery, and various police teams tried to catch him, but Harish managed to slip away every time by changing his name, description and hideouts,” he added.

“On interrogation, Harish confessed his involvement in the two robberies in October and November 2005. He has also been found involved in 10 other cases of robberies and thefts reported in Dwarka, Malviya Nagar and Vasant Vihar area,” the police officer added.

Investigations are now going on to check his involvement in other bank related crimes which were recently reported in Delhi and more arrests and recoveries are likely, the police said.
