Hyderabad, Feb 24 (IANS) Two road accidents in Andhra Pradesh Sunday claimed 23 lives and left 30 others injured. Sixteen people were killed and eight others injured when a jeep in which they were travelling was hit by a truck at Bandan in Niridigunda Mandal in Adilabad district, about 300 km from here.
The dead included five women and three children. The police said 24 people were travelling in the jeep, which was going towards Nirmal town when it collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
In the other accident, seven people were killed and 22 injured when a truck fell into a gorge in agency area in Visakhapatnam district, 600 km from here. The police said the truck carrying 29 people fell into the 80-feet deep gorge.
Andhra Pradesh accounts for one of the highest numbers of road accidents in the country. Accidents last year claimed more than 12,000 lives, the second highest figure after Tamil Nadu, which accounted for over 13,000 deaths.
The authorities blame rash driving for majority of road accidents in the state.
