RJD to protest attacks on backward castes
September 10th, 2011 - 2:58 pm ICT by IANSPatna, Sep 10 (IANS) Bihar’s opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)will stage a state-wide protest after a backward caste woman was assaulted and scalded for refusing to trim the nails of higher caste people, police said Saturday.
RJD’s protest, announced Friday, will highlight what it called the growing incidence of atrocities on weaker sections in the state, but the dates of the demonstration were not confirmed.
Four people were arrested Saturday on charges of pouring hot water over Nagina Devi, 35, and hitting her with an iron rod in Pokharpur village of Nalanda district Tuesday.
The arrested, including two women, have been charged, Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana told IANS over phone Saturday.
Nagina, from the barber community, was publicly humiliated and assaulted for refusing to clip the nails of higher caste women. She was admitted to a hospital with burn injuries all over her body, including her private parts, after the upper caste people poured hot water on her and beat her with an iron rod.
Nagina was given a compensation of Rs.20,000, said District Magistrate Sanjay Agrawal.
“She is still writhing in pain,” a family member of Nagina said.
RJD chief Lalu Prasad handed over Rs.10,000 to Nagina Tuesday when he called on her at hospital.
The incident sparked angry protests from the barber community under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Nai Sangh.
