Rioters tried to torch car with baby
August 8th, 2011 - 10:14 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 8 (IANS) A couple begged for their lives as rioters here threatened to torch their car with their baby inside, a media report said Monday.
Terrified Stephen and Heli Seeman fled their flat above Tottenham’s post office after the rampaging mob set it alight at 11.15 p.m., leaving them homeless, The Sun newspaper reported.
Seeking a place of safety for the night, the couple climbed into their car with their nine-month-old daughter Tanya.
Stephen, 34, recalled: “We slept in the car overnight, although we didn’t really sleep much as it was so noisy.
“The rioters were throwing bottles at my car. I put my hand out and said, ‘There is a baby in here’. I begged them to stop and they stopped.
“The rioting lasted until dawn. We have nothing, just the clothes we are wearing and the car,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
Anger in the North London community about Thursday’s killing of suspected gangster Mark Duggan, 29, by police led to a protest outside Tottenham police station Saturday.
It began peacefully but escalated as people hurled petrol bombs at the police station and then roamed the streets smashing, burning and looting.
