New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will send a team to investigate the alleged rape and killing of a minor girl in the compound of a police station in Uttar Pradesh, an official said Sunday.

“We have taken suo motu cognisance of media reports alleging that a teenaged girl was raped and killed in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh,” an NHRC official said.

“Apart from an on-the-spot inquiry, we have also decided to issue notice to the director general of police of the state, calling for a detailed report on the incident within four weeks,” the official added.

The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in the premises of the Nighaasan police station Friday night. Her family alleged that she was raped, killed and her body was hung from a tree to make it look like a suicide.

According to reports, the teenager along with her family used to live near a building coming up inside the premises of the police station.

“Eleven police personnel posted at the police station have reportedly been suspended following a protest by the local residents,” the NHRC official said.
