Rights panel takes up case of youth wrongly declared dead
April 27th, 2011 - 9:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 27 (IANS) the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday summoned a senior Uttar Pradesh health official over the case of a youth, whom a doctor allegedly declared dead and was sent to the mortuary when he was very much alive.
Sanjeev, 21, was severely injured in a road accident July 17, 2010 and was rushed to the MMG hospital in Ghaziabad by the police, according to the petition filed by human rights activists.
“The doctor on duty allegedly declared him brought dead and got him shifted to the mortuary,” a statement from the NHRC said Wednesday.
The NHRC issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh director general of health services, calling for a report on the issue within four weeks.
“When his (Sanjeev’s) family members arrived, they found him alive and crying in pain. They demanded stern action against the negligent doctor, but no action was taken by the authorities in the matter,” the statement added.
“Despite reminders in writing and over telephone, the director general failed to respond to the commission’s notice. In view of this, the commission today (Wednesday) directed the director general to appear before it on June 3 along with the relevant records in the matter and explain,” the statement said.
