Rights panel seeks police report on Nanda driver’s death
June 20th, 2010 - 7:40 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Taking cognisance of the mysterious death of a driver of prominent industrialist Anil Nanda, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Delhi Police on the matter within one week, an official said Sunday.
“The commission has taken note of the matter and asked for a report from the Delhi Police within one week,” a senior NHRC official said.
The rights body’s move comes against the backdrop of driver Janeshwar Sharma’s family members approaching it after police allegedly delayed the probe into the case.
Sharma, 41, a former armyman, was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital June 9 with 80 percent burns and died a week later on June 15.
After keeping silent on the matter for three days, police swung into action June 18 after a TV channel showed the dying driver accusing Nanda and his associates of setting him on fire allegedly for protesting sexual exploitation of young boys.
No one has been arrested so far even as police have registered a case of murder.
Police said Nanda has been quizzed in his C-12 New Friends Colony house about the allegations made by Sharma and his family.
Anil Nanda is the chairman of Akme Projects which has various projects in the national capital and also in Ludhiana, Goa and Bangalore
