Report sought on non-action against Trinamool candidate
April 13th, 2011 - 11:22 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, April 13 (IANS) The Election Commission (EC) Wednesday suspended the officer-in-charge of a police station and sought a report from the North 24 Praganas district administration in West Bengal for not arresting a candidate accused of assaulting poll officials.
“We have asked the North 24 Parganas district police superintendent and district election officer to submit a detailed report on why the main accused, who is a Trinamool Congress candidate, not arrested despite being present in the police station even after the incident,” state Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta told reporters.
“The EC, after going through the primary report of the incident, has already suspended the officer-in-charge of Bijpur police station Partha Pratim Roy for his negligence in duty. Besides, 12 people, including one of the accused, have been arrested,” said Gupta.
According to sources, a team of EC officials was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress supporters in Boldeghata area of Bijpur assembly constituency. The mob was instigated by Bijpur’s Trinamool candidate Subhranshu Roy.
“On the instruction of the returning officer and additional returning officer, an election team went to the area for defacement of graffiti from two-three buildings, when the supporters attacked them,” said Gupta.
“A massive manhunt has been initiated across the district for Subhranshu Roy,” said North 24 Pargans Police Superintendent Rahul Srivastav.
