Remains of woolly mammoth found in Russia
May 27th, 2011 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, May 27 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The remains of a woolly mammoth have been discovered by a group of students in the remote northeast Russian region of Yakutia, an official said Friday.
The students found the prehistoric remains while searching for charcoal to use in their metalwork course, said a spokesman from the local education department.
“One of the students was digging with a shovel when she ran into something hard. The students began digging to see what it was and pulled out a large section of the hip bone of a big mammal,” he said.
Archaeologists were immediately brought to the site. They confirmed that the bones belonged to a mammoth.
The mammoth - a close relative of the modern-day elephant - was known for its furry coat, huge tusks and giant dimension. It is thought to have appeared on earth some 4.8 million years ago.
While most woolly mammoths died approximately 12,000 years ago, a dwarf version survived on Russia’s Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean till 1700 B.C.
