Rebels kill pro-Maoist activist
December 6th, 2010 - 1:37 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 6 (IANS) A member of the pro-Maoist tribal body, Peoples’ Committee Against Police Atrocities, was killed by the rebels in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district because they suspected him to be an informer, police said Monday.
“Asit Bera was dragged out of his home Sunday night and later shot. His body was found in Bachurkhamar village of Nayagram area Monday morning,” Jhargram Superintendent of Police Praveen Tripathi told IANS on phone.
Maoists posters claiming the responsibility of the crime were also recovered from the area.
“In the posters, the Maoists said that Bera was given capital punishment for acting as a police informer,” Tripathi said.
“As we are conducting intensive raids in Nayagram area these days, the rebels suspected that Bera was acting as our informer,” he added.
Meanwhile, district Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that Bera was their supporter and was killed by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists.
