Ravana, puppets, dance in Nida Mahmood show
October 10th, 2011 - 9:25 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Nida Mahmood, the queen of “pop art”, knows how to play her cards well and be different. On the third day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), the designer brought popular Indian ‘tamasha’ on the ramp with puppets dancing and a Ravana sashaying down the ramp here Monday.
The Delhi-based designer, who is known for finding inspiration from ‘real India’, presented her line “The Great Indian Bohemian Tamasha” with a lot of colourful flavour and spice from Rajasthan.
The show started with two dancers performing like puppets on stage and this justified the theme of the collection. And when the Indian tamasha revolved around the Ramlila, Mahmood didn’t forget to bring the mythological demon king Ravana on stage.
“I am always inspired by the Indian culture and tradition, especially the Rajasthan puppet theatre and this what I tried to showcase through my collection. It is a very intangible concept but had a great experience designing the line. I wanted to showcase something different and inspiring,” Mahmood said after the show.
“It is difficult to create something which is non-existent but I wanted to challenge that belief and I am happy it worked out,” she added.
The collection saw a range of flare tops, trousers, dresses, jumpsuits and her signature mark - a sari draped over jeans with innovative headgear.
The colour palate included green, white and mustard. She also ended the show with a puppet dance.
