Raul Castro vows battle against corruption
December 24th, 2011 - 12:39 pm ICT by IANSHavana, Dec 24 (IANS/EFE) Cuban President Raul Castro warned that there was “no thinking twice about the battle against crime and corruption” and urged his government to be “implacable” in dealing with them, state television said.
Castro made his statement Wednesday before the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party.
According to the television report, the head of state and party chief said they must “go from words to deeds” and eliminate the weakness that favours the activities of criminals and corrupt officials.
The fight against corruption has been a flagship cause of the presidency of Raul Castro, who in 2009 established the Controller General’s Office that has since performed audits on hundreds of state companies and institutions.
In recent months, Cuban courts have tried several cases of corruption and economic crimes, including those in which an ex-minister and an ex-deputy minister of the food industry were convicted, along with a group of directors and employees of several state companies.
The Cuban president also called on the Communist Party to take a more leading role in the battle for control and oversight.
