New Delhi, March 9 (IANS) A day after the International Women`s Day, the central government told the Delhi High Court Wednesday that it will soon announce a policy to provide monetary compensation to rape victims.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna was informed that a set of guidelines to rehabilitate the rape victims was also being considered by the central government.

After being told by Additional Solicitor General A.S. Chandhiok that the matter was with the government, Chief Justice Misra asked him to follow it up.

Chandhiok replied that the policy was already in the pipeline.

Pawan Sharma, standing counsel for the Delhi government, said: “Once the guidelines come to us, we will notify the central policy and implement it.”

The Delhi government has not framed guidelines for granting compensation to rape victims, despite assuring the court in July 2009.

The Delhi government had then told the court that it was seriously looking into creating a fund for disbursal of compensation to rape victims.

On Wednesday, however, the Delhi government sought more time from the court.

The court was hearing a petition on guidelines for rehabilitation of rape victims, sensitization of prosecutors and police, and also reforming trial procedures.

The central government is also a respondent in the case along with the Delhi government. The case will be next heard on April 7.
