Rape on IBM call centre employee confirmed

Pune, Aug 11 (IANS) Medical tests confirmed the IBM call centre employee was raped last week even as the police Monday waited to speak with the victim for further details to speed up the investigation. The 22-year-old customer care executive, hospitalized after the alleged gang rape in the intervening night of Aug 7-8, remained in a state of shock and was yet to give her version of the incident that police consider crucial.

“The medical test report confirms that the girl was sexually assaulted,” investigating officer Ravindra Rasal told IANS without elaborating whether it looked like a gang rape as alleged by her boyfriend Hansraj Brahmne in his police complaint.

“There are injury marks on her body,” he said.

Contradictions in the version of the incident given by the girl’s boyfriend and the one gathered from her hostel inmates and IBM have foxed the police whose hopes rest on the traumatized girl’s statement to move ahead with the handicapped investigations.

While the girl’s boyfriend, on the basis of whose complaint the police lodged the first information report (FIR), says she told him last Friday that she was raped by eight to 10 people the previous night, according to her hostel inmates, the girl was in the hostel the whole night.

There are more contradictions.

The boy says he was told by his girlfriend that after returning to the hostel from the daylong duty Thursday, she received a call from a woman employee of the call centre asking her to come back to the office for some urgent work.

Contradicting this, the call centre personnel told the police, the girl was never called that night. Moreover, a check on the girl’s cell-phone record revealed that the only calls she had received that late evening were from her boyfriend.

The boyfriend also quoted the girl as having said that she hired a taxi and, while heading for the office, was intercepted by some people including a few cabbies and IBM employees.

“They took her to a hill near Phursungi, raped her and dropped her back to the hostel,” the boy told police.

IBM, on the other hand, says that a bodyguard accompanies a cabbie whenever sent to fetch an employee - a rule that came into force after the rape and murder of a call centre employee in Pune last November.

“In the first place, we do not summon an employee to work after being relieved from the work shift,” police quoted an IBM HRD officer to have told them.

The 26-year-old Brahmne and the girl, both from Nandurbar in Maharashtra, are childhood friends. Their relationship had soured lately though, and as such, the girl would avoid meeting him, the police gathered.

“Though we can’t say anything with certainty at this stage, we suspect some foul play by the young man who lied to us saying he was a bank manager whereas he is only a recovery boy on contract,” a top police officer told IANS.
