Ranji Trophy: Punjab, Baroda in trouble
November 19th, 2011 - 9:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) Punjab and last year’s runners-up Baroda were facing defeats Saturday while Mumbai’s Abhishek Nayar, Madhya Pradesh’s Naman Ojha and Mohnish Mishra scored fine hundreds on day three of the Ranji Trophy matches.
Punjab, chasing Saurashtra’s 542, were struggling at 44 for 4 after following-on at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The hosts, who made 278 in their first innings, need another 220 runs to make Saurashtra bat again.
Saurashtra’s left-arm fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat did the damage in the Punjab first innings while medium pacer Sandip Maniar took three in the second to put the home team on the backfoot.
Haryana have taken a healthy 363-run lead against Baroda at the Moti Bagh Stadium in the popular city of Gujarat. The visitors were 187 for 7 in their second innings after Baroda collapsed from 104 for one to 214 all out. Haryana made 390 in their first innings.
At Brabourne Stadium, Karnataka have the upper hand against Mumbai despite Abhishek’s Nayar second consecutive hundred of the season. Nayar was retired hurt on 137 as Mumbai ended the day at 354 for 8 in reply to Karnataka’s mammoth 635.
Ojha led from the front to take Madhya Pradesh to 344 for 3 against Bengal at the Jadavpur University Complex in Kolkata. The stylish batsman made a gritty 127 and was able supported by Mishra, who remained unbeaten on 130.
Kerala beat Tripura by an innings and 53 runs in a Plate Division match in Kochi’s Nehru Stadium.
