Randhir Singh opts out of next year’s IOA election
November 8th, 2011 - 10:14 pm ICT by IANSN0ew Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general Randhir Singh Tuesday said he will not run in its elections next year to pave way for youngsters to make their mark in sports administration.
“I would like to inform that in the 2012 general assembly meeting of Indian Olympic Association, I will not be standing for any post in the Olympic movement in India,” Randhir Singh wrote in a letter to his colleagues in the IOA.
“I am looking forward to making way for the youngsters. There are a lot of good young administrators. As a sportsman you want to retire at the top, and similarly as an administrator I want to leave when I am at the top,” said Randhir Singh, who is also the secretary general of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) where his tenure will continue till 2015.
Randhir Singh, a former Olympic-level trap and skeet shooter, was elected IOA joint secretary in 1984 and became the secretary general in 1987.
He was also elected member of the International Olympic Committee in 2001 and is currently the sole representative for India on the IOC.
Randhir Singh competed at five Olympic Games from 1968 to 1984 in mixed trap.
