Ramdev supporters to continue protests against graft
June 12th, 2011 - 5:14 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, June 12 (IANS) Even as yoga guru Baba Ramdev broke his nine-day fast Sunday, his supporters here said they would continue with their peaceful demonstrations against corruption and black money stashed by Indians in foreign tax havens.
“Though Baba has ended his fast, we will continue to hold sit-ins to support him and strengthen the anti-graft campaign started by him,” Ajay Bhadauria, the Lucknow division in-charge of the yoga guru’s Bharat Swabhiman Trust (BST), told reporters.
“Several social outfits will also extend their co-operation for the peaceful demonstrations that would continue to take place at the Jhulelal Park. We would not be observing the nine-hour-long fast that we started on a daily basis ever since Ramdev started his hunger strike (June 4),” he added.
Students, teachers, doctors and professionals from various fields have been assembling at Jhulelal Park in support of Ramdev.
“People from different walks of life continue to come here as they know that the campaign launched by Ramdev is in national interest,” social activist and coordinator of Uttar Pradesh RTI (Right to Information) council Akhilesh Saxena told reporters.
“It’s high time that all the citizens of the country, irrespective of caste, creed and religion get united to weed out corruption,” he added.
Ramdev’s protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground was forcibly broken up post-midnight June 4 and the yoga guru returned to his ashram to continue his fast. He was admitted to a Dehradun hospital Friday after his health deteriorated.
