New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS) Polls to the Rajinder Nagar assembly seat in central Delhi may be deferred following the death of sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Puran Chand Yogi Sunday morning, an election official said. Yogi was seeking re-election for the third time from the seat.Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Satbir Silas Bedi told IANS that polls to the seat could be held at a later date. The Delhi assembly polls are slated Nov 29.
The BJP and CEO Bedi were huddled in a series of meetings Sunday to discuss the suspected suicide of Yogi.
Yogi committed suicide early Sunday at his residence, police said. Yogi, 73, was a three-time BJP legislator from Rajinder Nagar.
Bedi said they were in consultations with senior BJP leaders to find a new candidate for Rajinder Nagar.
“We are also discussing it with the Election Commission of India,” she said.
According to police officials, Yogi was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his first floor room at around 7 a.m. by his wife when she went to look him up as his mobile phone was ringing continuously.
