Rajapakse promises land to people in northern Sri LankaAugust 13th, 2008 - 12:18 am ICT by IANS
Colombo, Aug 12 (Xinhua) Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said Tuesday that his government would ensure the people in the northern part of the country should have the right to own land. “As much as we have given the eastern people their right to own land, we will soon ensure that northern people would be free to do likewise,” Rajapakse told a political gathering in Colombo.
The president was referring to his government’s military thrust against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
Government troops say they have almost achieved success in trying to crush the LTTE rebels in their last holds in the Northern province.
In July last year, Sri Lankan military announced that it had the rebels from the Eastern province. Since then, two elections have been successfully conducted in the province.
The LTTE has been fighting a three-decade-old separatist war to carve out a separate homeland for the minority Tamil community in the combined North and Eastern provincial areas.
More than 70,000 people have lost thier lives in the conflict.
