Rains trigger landslides in Himachal

Shimla, June 16 (IANS) Moderate to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh Thursday triggered landslides, hampering movement of vehicles at several places, officials said.

A government spokepserson told IANS here that traffic on the Hamipur-Bilaspur-Shimla road was disrupted for serveral hours due to landslides.

The Leh-Manali national highway remained closed on the third day Thursday due to road damage near Rani Nallah, 5 km short of the majestic Rohtang Pass from tourist resort Manali.

The weather office here said the maximum temperatures dropped by three to four degrees Celsius due to moderate to heavy rains in the state.

Mehre village in Hamirpur district was the wettest in the state with 174 mm of rains while Amb received 92 mm, Nadaun 80 mm, Bangana 77 mm and Pachhad 51 mm.

Shimla, which recorded 16.4 mm of rains, also recorded a minimumm of 14 degrees Celsius.

The Met department has forecast widespread rains in the state in the next few days due to cyclonic circulation and active western disturbances.
