Rains bring relief to parts of Uttar Pradesh
July 16th, 2011 - 4:56 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, July 16 (IANS) After days of sultry weather, parts of Uttar Pradesh, including capital Lucknow, Saturday witnessed light to moderate rains accompanied by thunderstorms.
“A cyclonic circulation over parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly western regions, is the cause of the rainfall,” state meteorological director J.P. Gupta told reporters here.
“Such weather conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours, after which the intensity of the showers would decline across the state,” he added.
After spells of intermittent showers in the early hours, the intensity of rains increased around 11.30 a.m., leaving several places in Lucknow waterlogged.
“For the last six days, we were experiencing hot and humid conditions. We wish the showers continue…they have provided the much-needed relief,” said Ram Narayan, a retired Geological Survey of India (SCI) scientist and resident of Indira Nagar.
Students too were seen enjoying the showers, and wished that the rain gods force their schools to be shut for a couple of days.
“Unlike schools in Allahabad and Varanasi, our school has not been closed due to heavy rains. It would be really great for us if our school too is closed for a day or two on account of heavy rains,” said Preetam Mishra, a student of St. Joseph’s School.
While rainfall recorded in Lucknow was 1.3 mm, Etawah, Hathras, Fatehgarh, and Kanpur recorded 185 mm, 67 mm, 75.6 mm and 54 mm of rain respectively.
Lucknow’s minimum temperature Saturday was 27.2 degrees Celsius, one degree above what is average for this time of the season.
