Railways begin Kolkata Metro derailment probe
October 21st, 2010 - 8:41 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Oct 21 (IANS) A four-member team of the Indian Railways Thursday began enquiring into Kolkata Metro’s first ever derailment, where two coaches of a Kavi Subhas-bound train derailed Oct 20, officials said.
The team, accompanied by Kolkata Metro officials, went to Noapara in North 24 Paraganas and inspected the damaged coaches.
“The team did not visit the derailment spot as the damaged tracks are being repaired. But they may go there late at night or next morning,” a senior metro official said.
Two coaches of a south-bound train derailed Wednesday, while approaching the Central Metro Station. Around 2,800 passengers were stranded inside the non-air conditioned coach for over 10 minutes. No one, however, was injured.
Around 100 metres of the track were damaged as well, resulting in disruption of metro services in the city hub for over 11 hours.
The Railway Board team, led by general manager (Eastern Railway) Varun Bharthuar, also included B.N. Rajsekharan, R.N. Lala and Kamalesh Gupta.
Metro authorities have not ruled out the possibility of sabotage.
“The team has been asked to submit the report within three days. We will comment after it is submitted,” the official said.
