Rahul’s changes empowered us: Women Youth Congress workers

Rahul Gandhi New Delhi, Nov 27 (IANS) Newly-elected women office bearers of the Indian Youth Congress said democratisation has empowered them and things changed after Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi took over the party’s frontal organisation in 2007.

“When an IYC team wants to meet a senior Congress leader in the state for some work, we get time easily,” said Kunda Raut from Maharashtra’s Ramtek, adding “Earlier it was not so.”

According to Raut, “things changed after Rahul’s drive to democratise the IYC” and the changes “attracted a lot of women in rural areas to join the youth wing”.

Her colleague from Dhule, Nazneen Sheikh, said a new identity as an IYC office bearer has let her reach out to women in her community.

“I feel I can do a lot of things for them now,” said Sheikh.

Both Sheikh and Raut said women members of IYC are now assured of their community work getting noticed by the senior leaders as Gandhi has made the performance monitoring system more transparent.

This, they said, helped the IYC rope in women down to the polling booth-level committees in rural areas of Maharashtra.
