Rahul tours flood-hit Uttar Pradesh district

Bharatiya Janata PartyGorakhpur, Sep 11 (IANS) Congress general secretary and MP fromAmethi Rahul Gandhi Thursday visited Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur region, where over 10,000 people have been displaced by floods.Gandhi was in flood-hit Bihar before he took a train to reach Deoria district, 70 km from here. “He boarded the Amrapali Express and reached Deoria around 11 a.m.,” Congress spokesperson Ram Kumar Bhargava told reporters here.

Gandhi visited various flood affected villages of the Deoria, Kushinagar and Padrauna districts of the Gorakhpur region.

He took a boat ride to cross the swollen Rapti river and reached out to the affected people.

“He also travelled a good distance on a motorcycle in the Severahai block of Devariya where four-wheelers could not move,” Bhargava added.

Gandhi was slated to reach Gorakhpur late Thursday evening to flag off a convoy carrying flood relief material to Bihar.

“Besides visiting other flood-hit areas, Gandhi will meet patients of Japanese Encephalitis Friday who are admitted in BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur town,” said Bhargava.

The disease has claimed around 210 lives since June in the region and a total of 1,132 people are being treated in various hospitals of the district for the detected and other symptoms of the disease.

He is also likely to take stock of the law and order situation in the region after Sunday’s communal violence in Azamgarh district in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

One person was killed and three others were injured Sunday in arson and communal violence that followed the attack on the convoy of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gorakhpur parliamentarian Yogi Adityanath.
