Qualifiers Abhijeet, Nikunj advance to ITF futures second round

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) Qualifier Abhijeet Tiwari blanked Ta Chen of Chinese Taipei while Nikunj Siwach overcame compatriot Yannick Nelord to advance to the second round of $15,000 PNB Indian Tennis Federation (ITF) men’s futures tournament at the R.K. Khanna stadium here Monday.It took just 33 minutes for qualifier Abhijeet to dispatch an erratic Chen 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.

Another qualifier, Nikunj, who lost a lopsided first set, came back strong to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 against Nelord.

The 17-year-old wild card holder Karunuday Singh, who has been training in Spain in Tennis Val Academy, showed some sparks but failed to put his game together in his 6-3, 6-4 loss to Vijay Sunder Prashanth.

“I did not serve well and made far too many errors. I wasn’t able to practice well in last three-four days. It just wasn’t my day,” said a dejected Karunuday.

Sixth seed Hsin-Han Lee was given a fright by 18-year-old Vijayant Malik, who lost steam after losing the first set in a tie-break and went down 6-7 (5), 1-6.

In the doubles, all the top seeds eased into the second round of the tournament. While top seeded Indian pair of Ashutosh Singh and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya gave a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing to India-Pakistan combine Anshuman Singh and Yasir Khan, second-seeded Rohan Gajjar and Tushar Liberhan overcame a determined Chinese Taipei duo I-ta Chen and Hsin-Han Lee 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Third seeded German Peter Gojowczyk and Japanese Yuichi Sugita faced little challenge from Indians Ajai Selvaraj and V. Peranamullur-Chandrasekhar, thrashing them 6-1,6-2.

Fourth-seeded Indians Prashanth and R. Virali-Murugesan defeated Indo-American pair of Whit Livingston and Shivang Mishra 6-4, 6-2.

Prateek Bhambri and Abhijeet beat Rahil Makharia and Uzbek Vaja Uzakov 6-4, 4-6 (10-8).
