Quake rocks Pakistan, at least 160 killed (Fourth lead)

Islamabad, Oct 29 (Xinhua) More than 160 people were killed and scores of others injured in a powerful quake that rattled Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province Wednesday morning, the DawnNews television channel reported.The 6.4-magnitude quake that struck 60 km northeast of Quetta, the provincial capital at 5.10 a.m., also damaged more than 500 houses and left about 15,000 homeless in the worst-hit Ziarat area, the report said.

As many as 12 aftershocks have been recorded following the major quake, the meteorological department said and warned that more aftershocks were expected in a week.

A field hospital consisting of 25 doctors and 100 paramedics has been dispatched to the quake-affected areas. Up to 1,000 tents, 1,500 blankets and edible items have also been sent to these areas.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani announced that his government would provide all possible aid to the affected people in the earthquake. Other provinces also said they would provide assistance to the quake-affected areas.

The provincial government has sought help from the armed forces to carry out relief operations.

The earthquake triggered mudslides in several parts of Balochistan, which is Pakistan’s largest but most sparsely populated province.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale shook Kashmir and Pakistan’s mountain region Oct 8, 2005, killing at least 73,000 people.
