A South Eastern Railway (SER) spokesman said the incident was discovered in the early hours of the day a little before the train was about to cross the 400-metre stretch.
Railway employees saw some people trying to bend the line and informed the officials who ordered the train to be stopped.
Train movement was disrupted for six hours before the lines were repaired.
