Punjab youths held for hijacking bus (Lead)
August 23rd, 2011 - 9:29 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Aug 23 (IANS) Ten youths from Punjab on a holiday in Himachal Pradesh’s Khajjiar tourist resort were Tuesday arrested for intimidating locals and hijacking a mini tourist bus from Gujarat, police said.
“Before hijacking the bus, the accused had a scuffle with the locals and assaulted a forest guard. Later, the accused hijacked the bus by brandishing sharp-edged weapons,” Superintendent of Police Madhu Sudan told IANS, adding that the hijacking seemed an attempt to escape the spot.
More than 22 tourists, including 10 children, were aboard the bus when it was hijacked from Khajjiar, 475 km from Shimla. The accused directed the driver to take it towards Chamba town, he said.
However, the local people alerted the police and the bus was stopped some 20 km from the incident spot and the youths were arrested.
A case of kidnapping and intimidation has been registered against the youth, belonging to Gurdaspur district of Punjab.
They would be brought before a local court Wednesday, the police official added.
