Punjab to give telephone facility in jails
November 11th, 2009 - 9:42 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chandigarh, Nov 11 (IANS) The Punjab government Wednesday announced that it would provide telephone facility to prisoners to enable them to talk to their family members.
Punjab Jails Minister Hira Singh Gabria said that this facility would be provided through public call office (PCO) system to check the illegal practice of using mobile phones by the jail inmates.
Jails in Punjab are notorious for inmates flouting rules and using mobile phones.
Gabria said video conferencing would also be introduced soon to link prisons with courts for quick dispensation of justice.
