Punjab remits jail sentences to mark Baisakhi
April 12th, 2011 - 12:43 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, April 11 (IANS) The Punjab government Monday announced remission in the sentences of prisoners in various jails across the state on the occasion of ‘Baisakhi’, the harvest festival.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Monday announced grant of remission of sentences from two months to one year to convicts in various jails. However, the remission would not be granted to a person convicted in heinous crimes, a state government spokesman said here.
The remission of one year would be granted to the prisoners who have been awarded imprisonment from 10 to 20 years. Likewise, remission of nine months would be given to prisoners who are imprisoned for seven to 10 years.
For prisoners serving jail term of five to seven years, the remission will be for six months.
For jail term of three to five years, remission will be three months and for jail terms of less than three years, the remission will be two months.
